STRIKE

We heard about the teachers strike back at the end of the school year last year. Honestly, didn't think much of it and thought for sure things would get sorted out and blow over before it actually happened. Summer passed, the kids went back to school and the teachers announced that they would strike October 6. Again it was weeks away and I was pretty confident they would still come to an agreement with the government with a date on the table. However, October 6 rolled around and we stayed home. The teachers strike officially started. We were honestly excited about a few days or even a week off. Two weeks max for sure. It would give us time to reset, catch up and have a little fall break!

We have kept the kids busy. Have enjoyed our time off. Slept in, went to bed way too late and hung out with friends literally every single day. Im not sure I feel more tired or more refreshed to be honest.

Of the 3 weeks they have been off we have gone to the gym 4 times a week. This has saved us. We have ran errands, updated kids passports, went to Cirque, attended birthday parties and pool parties, permed bentley's hair, cleaned out closets, celebrated Allisons 40th birthday, had so many friends over and our kids have gone to friends houses. Carter even went on a sunset hike with a group of friends where they hiked 4km up a mountain, watched the sunset and star gazed and then hiked 4 km back down in the pitch black. He is more brave than me!

It has been a revolving door of FUN and I could use ONE pajama day. My thoughts have shifted a little from fun to worried. 3 weeks of out school feels long, detrimental to high school. I worry about Carter most. High school semesters are so short. The government and teachers couldn't be farther apart to a solution and it feels like its going to get messy.

As parents, its hard to find accurate information on what is happening. I hear that students will be back to school on Tuesday next week but we thought that last week. Its starting to feel uncertain and although I worry about our teachers and want them to have confidence in the matters that matter most to them right now which is classroom caps on student to teacher ratio and classroom complexity, I am really starting to worry about how this will affect our student and our own kids. Its hard to hold both sides as a parent because we love our teachers so much.

Im really hoping the kids go back to school next week. Im worried about the stress the teachers will be under to get everyone to catch up but also the stress our kids will be under to catch up. This doesn't feel great but we will do everything we can to help support where support is needed.

We will continue to live our fake fall break the best we can because we know its going to feel heavy the moment the kids walk back through those school front doors.

But until then we will capture the happiness where and we can!
