A calm, organized space.
January always brings cold fresh air. It forces us to stay indoors more and always give me organizing vibes that I look forward to at the start of each new year.
The past week has been COLD! Like, coldest place on earth type of cold. A full polar vortext blew through our city for the last 5 days and it has been biting, freeze your nose hairs in a second type cold.
Although it didn't cancel anything, even with the windchill of -46 or so, we really took the time we did have at home to oganize the kids rooms and it feel SO GOOD! We just used things we had around the house and only bought one $40 shelf for Carter's room.
Penny's was fist. She has been gifted a few really special photos from her Grandma Reed and she's been wanting to put them up into a gallery wall for a couple of months. We gifted her some fun tween-girl prints for christmas and her and I painted a few frames we had to make it even more fun and her! It was so fun to do this project with her.
I love how uniquely Penny it is. These bigger ballet dancer painting are so special. Brian's Grandparents, Lorne & Vernetta, had three beautiful children to start off their eventual family with 8 children total, the oldest was named Loretta. Which is Lorne and Vernetta put together. Unfortunately, all three of their children passed away in a tragic car crash. On the back of these frames was a beautiful hand written note to "My dearest Loretta on your 7th birthday". They were given to Loretta from her parents (Brian's grandparents) shortly before the accident. Penny has Loretta's name as her middle name. Great Grandma Reed always said she really did remind her so much of her Loretta. This name has always been so speical to us and the significant memory of a darling little girl who loved to dance, just like our Penny Loretta. A few months ago, Penny was gifted these beautiful paintings.
They hang in her room, in a gallery wall, with a total peace and calm about them. Penny tells me how she can feel Loretta with her, watching over her. Her own personal little angel. My eyes well with emotion when I think about that. How comforting she must feel. These painting are so beyond loved and I am so grateful they were handed down to Penny.
Her wall is filled with colour and fun. It is bright and loud and just like her! And of course, our new found Swifty also had a moment for Taylor Swift too..
We love how her room turned out. Organized, updated and special.. just for her!
After Penny's room, we worked on Carter's room. This guy's room was A WRECK! It honestly needed to be done for years and I am so glad we finally got around to it! We took some "before and after" photos knowing the results would be black and white to what they were.
This TV Stand was never intended to go into Carter's room however with his love for Lego and his intense amount of massive sets it soon became the home for them. Months of displaying them became years and we knew it needed to be fixed!
The clutter in his room felt overwhelming. Carter worked hard with me to go through every drawer, his closet, under his bed, his desk etc etc. It, surprisingly, only took a couple of hours to turn the whole thing inside out, upside down and put it all back together again.
What a difference!!
I love the details of Carter's room. The forever Carter space. His love for Basketball and baseball, the lego sets, posters that represent him perfectly and his two best friends being represented on his desk with the ugliest, silliest gifts that they've given to him. (The singing/dancing cactus (and GF Oreos) from Toby and the "Fugler" from Nixon)
When it was all said and done, Carter came and gave me a huge hug thanking me for doing his room with him and told me how much he loved it. That made everything worth it. Those teen hugs are fewing between them and I appreciate every single spontaneous one!
Bentley initially didn't want to do his room. In his defence, we organize Bentley's room more often and his room really wasn't that bad. However after seeing how refreshing Penny and Carter's room looked, he came down and asked if we could do his room after I finish Carter's that night. Despite my exhaustion, I was excited for him and said we would make it happen too.
Luckily, because we've gone through his closet and drawers not too long ago, it was mostly just rearranging furniture and hanging up a shelf. It was great to make it nice and fresh for him.
I didn't get a before photo of Bentley's room because we really didn't have any intentions of doing his room at the same time but this really opened up some space for him. I love that he was in all the details of his room. He directed me where he wanted his bed and desk and helped me with where he thought the shelf would look best. This kid is awesome and his room is a perfect representation of his love for basketball, lego and more basketball.
And yes.. he too has a "fugler" that Carter bought him for Christmas.. lol
And maybe, by far, my most cherished space in their rooms is their cork boards filled with things all about them. Their best friends, family, accomplishments and all things them. A small gentle token in their room to always remind them how loved they are and all the adventures life has in store for them.
