Take me out to the ball game.
As if 150 commitments (I even counted!) between March and the end of June this spring for only baseball and basketball wasn't enough the boys are in summer baseball too. You'd think that we would be tapped out but not our boys, they are on cloud 9 when they're on that court or diamond so they both tried out for the Summer All Stars Vipers teams and both made it.
These boys really are amazing little baseball players, especially for only having one year under their belts. We are so proud of them! They are SO fun to watch and I wouldn't rather be anywhere else then watching them play baseball. It is exciting and nerve wracking and truly, just so much fun.
We have been playing Vipers baseball since the end of June. We are at the diamond at least 5-6 times per week and often Brian and I are dividing and conquering with the two boys having baseball commitments at the same time at different locations. It is overwhelming at times. The crazy amount of prep (sunscreen, bug spray, so much water, washing jerseys every day etc) is crazy but seeing how happy it makes Carter and Bentley, I wouldn't trade it for the world!
Bentley has been amazing this year on his minors Vipers team. He has really taken to back catching and is so good at it! It is so fun to watch him play! Also, actually how cute is he in baseball getup?! Im dying!!
Unfortunately, Bentley's season has come to a quick hault but we will get to that in a minute.
Carter has also been playing amazing and is a core player in his team. He has developed so much this year in baseball and truly so great on this Vipers team! He is fierce and unstopable! His swing is so hard and he can crush that ball when he makes contact. He can think quick on defence and I am so proud that he's ours! Way to go Carter!!
And this girl... She is the real M.V.P here. She has been toted around from game to game and practice to practice with the best attitude making friends along the way. She watches her brothers, cheers them on from behind home plate and does craft after craft while we wait. She is incredible and Im not sure the boys realize how much of a sacrifice this is for her. They are lucky to have her.
Now for the unfortunate part. Summer baseball was coming to pause anyways because on Sunday we are leaving for vacation BUT it ended a week early for Bentley because last week at a practice there was a teammate pitching to him at bat and it was coming right for his head. That would have been fine because he had his helmet on but his amazing reflexes got the best of him when he put his hand up to block the ball at his helmet and the pitch got him right in the thumb. He walked it off and took his base but it was pretty sore and swollen.
We watched it for a few days, he played games and was even the back catcher (how is his pain tollerance so high??!) but on Monday this week, I took him to a doctor to get it checked out. Carter also had a sore index finger that he really couldn't straighten for two weeks. It wasn't really bugging him and he didn't really complain about it and to be honest, I didn't even realize that he couldn't straighten it or I would have taken him in sooner but the doctor checked out his finger too and sent Carter for an x ray at the same time as Bentley.
Carter's results came back first...
We initally thought his x rays looked good because you couldn't see much on them but the radiologist called an hour later and said it is in fact broken. So hes in a little finger splint with the hope of it straightening out.
Bentley's results came in second. His was more obvioulsy broken. Shoot.
This was sad news. Because it's his thumb and we can't just buddy his fingers together AND its his catching glove hand he has to leave baseball a week early. Although he's not happy about this news, he's is trying his best to be a good sport about it.
And because he couldn't go to his practice last night, he went to Carter's baseball game and was the best bat-boy for them! Fetching all those bats after the batters hit the ball and ran. Glad he could at least be close to the field.
And yes.. you read that right... Carter is still playing this last week. He uses his splint all day every day and all night and takes it off to play baseball because it's not hurting him and its not his glove hand. I think the only way he would stay off the field is if he was in a full body cast...
We are nearly heading on a holiday and then they both will be home for the final weekend of baseball and last tournament and we're all really hoping their bones heal up and are ready to play by the time we get home.
Here's to praying these boys get to finish what they started this summer.
