Mom's General Conference Store
Twice a year, we listen to General Conference. Its a world wide broadcast online from our church leaders. It always invites a special spirit but actually listening to it with children is tricky. A couple of years ago we came accross an idea and it has been amazing and works like a charm. Not only are our kids quiet but they are fully engaged. We can have deeper conversations and they ask questions about things they don't understand and its worth every single dime we spend!
Welcome to Mom's General Conference Store!
I set it up Sunday morning. Everyone is excited to see what the general store will hold. Usually little trinkets or things to keep their hands busy. They get "free" colouring pages, connect the dots and word search pages to help keep their hands busy. I have a stash of "conference bucks" and they can earn $1 for being quiet and listening and an extra $1 if they can tell us what the talk was about. Each talk is 10 minutes or so.
If they do it the whole time, they will be able to buy everything in the store. If they can't do it, then we save the things in the store for next time. So far, they've emptied out the store, every single time!
Its fun seeing their strategy. They all always save their money. They don't go for the $1 and $2 candies.. they ALWAYS go straight for the gold first and then save the candy for the end.
When I asked the kids whats their favourite part of conference (*** besides the general store... because, lets be honest, it is so fun!) Penny said her favourite part was listening to cool stories about Jesus. Bentley said the music was his favourite part and Carter said the non stop snacking that he does while he listens. LOL.
Although Im sure we dont actually even hear half of what is being broadcasted because we're distracted with kids and life, what we do hear is always so spiritually uplifting. I love that we just stay in our pyjamas, snuggle up together and try to get anything we can out of this broadcast. Even Kobe was just relaxed and calm snuggled up with the kids.
I am grateful for this special weekend.
