Eviction Notice: 2020
Dear Twenty Twenty,
What can I say about you. Wow. Just Wow! Are you kidding me?! You came in here acting like you had nothing up your sleeve. You walked in slowly (unless you were in Australia, then 2020 came in HOOOTTT!) and then just like the game Wink Murder you started stricking off every month uncontrolably. You win, I cried more this year then all the other years combined. You forced us to unite and then ripped us apart. You really were a piece of work.
I absolutely plan to walk into 2021, sit down and touch nothing. Im wildy terrified too because just when I felt like "That could/would never happen" Ha! Jokes on me.. it totally happened in 2020.
2020 was a year of so much loss and heartache. Exponential growth in mental health and suicide rates. Jobs were lost, families not aloud to see eachother and small tokens of affection, like a simple hug, were said to be dangerous.
GUYS! I CAN NOT EVEN! 2020 has been mostly awful but there still were some sweet and tender moments. Like remember when they closed all the playgrounds and we had to stay at home... and then, one by one, they opened the playgrounds up and it felt like heaven had arrived. That. Was. Awesome! Or remember when school was shut down from March to June and we all nearly didnt make it out alive (speaking for myself here) and then the kids went back to in person learning in September... That. Was. Also. Awesome!
So Twenty Twenty, although there were tiny slivers of happiness, we now happily bid you farewell.
Signed,
The one still crying about this mess.
Nevertheless, we are taught that if we don't know sorrow we don't know joy. We were SO fortunate this year that Brian was able to continue to stay employed. We count our blessings on that every day! The extra time at home with the kids was also pretty fun (somedays)! We did countless adventures in our own province and found little gems of the world we didn't know exsisted. Above everything else, we have stayed healthy and we are also happy about that! 2020 brought us our little fur baby, Kobe, that Im finally starting to be in love with...kinda. New Years Eve was spontanious. We just went along as the hours past and did our thing. Penny set up a spa morning for herself so I could paint her nails and she could watch a show all at the same time. Sounds perfect! The kids actually had endless screens on NYE. We were tired and haden't really spent much time at home since we've been out adventuring so much so it just happened to work out and we weren't mad about it. I made sure to have them do our annual "Year In Review" which I always cherish and love to see what they come up with each year! We finsihed off the evening trying to stay awake as long as we could. Around 9:30 we decided to drive downtown to our favourite drive through (Peter's Drive in). We looked online and it said it was open! But upon arrival, it was totally closed, (there you go again 2020, you just needed one last say.. loud and clear, loud and clear) so instead we hit up a nearby McDonalds for 5 Oreo McFlurries. We had a dance party in the car listening to all our favouite songs on volume much too loud with a ton of glow sticks I had found in our party bucket in the basement. Within 5 minutes of getting our ice cream and 3 bites later, all three kids were completely OUT. Totally zonked around 10:30. We headed home and put them each to bed. Brian and I rang in the new year together snuggled up watching a new Movie.
Today was pretty chill. We woke up late, stayed in our pajamas until 1pm and had our fancy new years feast which was hot dogs and hambergers.. coming in strong, I know. We spent the afternoon sledding and the evening hot tubbing. Although I know that with this one particular calendar change, the effects of 2020 will still continue on, I do have hope. It's got to get better. We have struggled though some pretty major Mental Health issues this year. Brian had hand surgery, artitis flares and most recentey a terrible (AWFUL!) allergic reaction to we think blackberries maybe.
Covid-19 has been so hard on our sweet children too. Yes, children are resilient but it doesn't mean that they don't have feelings. Children tend to internalize their feeling becuase sometimes, they don't know how to lay it all out like we adults can. This year was particularily gutting to see each of our kids stuggle at different times and specifically about the pandemic. Bless their sweet souls. Following the rules was a priority but following the cues of our children and their mental health was more of a priority for us. It was and is still so vital.
As for resolutions. I've REALLY REALLY lowered that bar and this year, we're just going to make it through 2021. We will find happiness and glorious sunshine and adventure. We will make the best of what this year has to offer. Change for me is hard. So this year has been, well, kinda suffocating to say the least but its a new year. New beginnings and every day is one day farther from 2020 and its attitude problem.
So! Although we may not be stoked about 2021, we are stocked for it! Cheers to 2021.
