Luck of the..
Just kidding, there is no luck right now. Four Days ago I had no idea I wouldn't be sending the kids off to school in their green shirts with fun green snacks packed in their lunch kits. I had no idea that I would become their teacher "indefinitely".. I didn't know any of that. Sunday night, it was announced in Alberta the all schools would be closed and that students would get a final report card and would be staying home "indefinitely". The world is literally in shambles with COVID-19. This seems surreal to me. Somehow in such a short period of time, the whole world changed, literally. Our jobs as parents is to keep as much of a regular routine as possible for the kids. Yesterday I took the day to just wrap my mind around teaching grade 4,2 and Kindergarten until possibly the end of the school year. I took the time I needed to just process the announcements made. We are all suppose to be isolated within our homes until further notice as best as we can. Only one person, if possible, from your family attend a grocery store. No playdates, meetings, play grounds... nothing. I still can hardly swallow this news.
Today was our first day of "School". Im trying so hard to add an actual curriculum but also just be present and be with the kids. Today, as I imaged, was all over the map. We figured out what worked and what didn't and we will adjust daily until we get the right method down. I've stayed up late the last two nights just trying to figure it all out and set it up. I didn't want them without a schedule for even a few days because I know our kids work best on a schedule and also if this time in the world is confusing for us, I can't even imagine how confusing it must be for kids. Im trying to make life as "normal" as possible. I organized grade level, subject folders for them as well as set up our work space.
And of course, as luck would have it.. it was also St Patricks Day today. A couple of days ago the kids made a Leprechaun Trap in hopes to catch the Leprechaun this morning... Poor Penny was having nightmares about him for days. I continually offered for me to put the trap away so it would stop freaking her out but she didn't want me to.
Luckily this morning, we didn't catch him but the sneaky little guy went down our free slide and then pushed the trap to the end of the table and dropped down and got away. Sneaky!
We had our traditional Lucky charms for breakfast and of course I made them each little surprises throughout the day too!
We did art today in "school" and made little shamrock stain glass and it was so amazing to see them take it so seriously and try their very best. IT WAS SO SWEET!!!
We did math and LA too and overall it was successful but we will for sure be tweaking a few things to make it even better.
Right after lunch I showed the kids a really fun thing. Last night I made these baking soda balls with each a one dollar loonie in them. I mixed baking soda and water together and then formed the balls and died them green (they mostly looked yellow though). Then we went outside and I told them that each little St Patricks day ball had a surprise in it for them. We talked about the reaction that happens when Baking Soda and Vinegar collide and watched the magic happen. At the very end they each got their lucky loonie and we're really happy. It was so fun to have this time with them again. School, sports and extra activities take up all our days so having this time has been really special for me.
Im really praying this quarantine doesn't actually last until summer. We will for sure be going crazy!
