Bye Bye Suckie.
Today was a hard day in anticipation for tonight. Tonight our little family said goodbye to a beloved little thing. Carter's suckie (aka. His Souther). Go ahead and think Im overreacting.. but for Carter (and me) this was a hard step to take. From the day Carter was born, he has never really liked to cuddle. He is very independent and strong willed. There are only two things that calm him down and those are his Blankie and his Suckie. Although being two and a half I think it is time to retire his suckie. I have tried in the past to take suckie away.. say it was broken.. cut off the tip of it .. but it never worked. I didn't want to be the one ripping it out from under him. He is still my baby. I knew with Carter being so strong willed.. HE would have to make the choice to give his suckie up. So we thought that we would do it in a creative way. A way that he could still always have suckie .. just not in his mouth. We decided to take him to build a bear.

Walking into the door brought some pretty raw emotions to me.

I was nervous.. wondering how long we would be sitting in the store until he decided it was Ok to put suckie inside his new teddy. But more than any other emotion.. I felt sad. Sad because this was the last thing tying him to being my "baby" he has no more diapers, onesies, crib.. and the very last thing was this suckie.. and now its gone too. He is my little big boy now. A new chapter, new emotions.
I had been prepping him all day.. telling him we were no longer going to have suckie but that he was going to put sickie inside teddy and teddy was going to keep suckie safe for him. When we first got into the store, he was excited. He picked out the teddy that he wanted to make...

When we asked him if he was going to give suckie to his teddy.. this is what he did..

This is what you mean right mom? ... No quiet buddy. Sorry. We showed him the stuffing that would get to go inside teddy and he was excited about it!

We showed him the hearts that he would get to pick out and put one inside teddy.

And Bentley watched intently with his suckie in his mouth.. looking at me like.. is this real life..? Will I have to do this too one day? *Sigh*

Then we were ready to go.. not knowing if this would be a quick thing or a couple of hours.. but we started. He picked out the perfect heart for his teddy.

And then he gave his suckie one last "kiss" said "Love you suckie" and then he did it... really quickly.. he put suckie inside teddy!

He was able to step on the foot peddle and watch as the stuffing filled his new teddy.

his rubbed his heart .. for extra love!

And then.. it was over. It was over before we knew it. And he really didn't seem to mind. Maybe this was harder for me then for him? I hoped so! We walked back through the mall towards the car and he was on cloud 9 with teddy in tow!

And a couple of times he would stop and give suckie (which was specifically placed in teddy's hand so Carter would be able to still feel it) a Kiss! Cute Right!?

Everything seemed perfect! Until we were about half way home.. he started crying and asking Brian and I to take suckie out and put it in his mouth. I calmly explained that he was a big boy now and no longer needed to have a suckie so Teddy was going to hold suckie for him and he could hold teddy. My heart was breaking inside as I saw this sad face..

Tonight he is in bed, still asking to take suckie out, and we are hoping he doesn't end up destroying the teddy in order to find suckie... desperate times call for desperate measures haha! So, heres to a couple of days of tough parenting.. maybe he will cuddle me more now!? Wishful thinking? Either way, I love this kid!
