Carter's 1st Virus :(
Well this is nothing but sad for this post... my sweet little jelly-bean is sick. So why blog about it? Because although this is not something really to fun to remember... one day I'll be asked when was Carter's 1st real cold.. and I'll remember when! So here we have it 6 1/2 months old.
It started on Tuesday with a fever and the poops. Poor little guy. He had a fever of 39.5 for 24 hours and then to our relief his fever broke! "YAY" I thought to myself.. its over... we made it through. But, Carter stopped eating, drinking and became really docile and snugly! This is when I knew it was something more than the fever... Carter is NEVER snugly with me unless its 5 minutes before bedtime. for the last 4 days he has been very... sad... snugly... and just really not himself. Last night we took him to the doctors because we were afraid of him getting dehydrated because he will hardly drink or eat... and better to get it checked out by the doctor than to worry... we have free health care so why not!?
We got Carter in some comfy jammies and off we went to the emergency care... (it would have taken 2 weeks to get into our family doctor so this was our alternative.) We waited for 45 minutes before they got us a room. So many things running through my head as I listened to the girl sitting beside us tell her dad how she is confused as to why "America's Got Talent" is judged by two Brits and a Canadian (good point i guess). My worst fear was that Carter would be dehydrated and they would have to give him an IV. I hate needles and I hate when my son gets them too. I just hoped and prayed that although he was pooping out so much.. blowing though every diaper, outfit and blankets we had put enough liquid back into his little body.
Once we got into the room.. we waited another 45 minutes. Before last night Carter just wouldn't eat or drink much and had diarrhea (poor thing!) but had not vomited... until last night. As we were waiting in the room to see the doctor after the nurse had checked him over we tried to give him a little bit of milk in a sippie-cup (he wouldn't take a bottle). As soon as I stood him up about 3 seconds later Carter projectile vomits over EVERYTHING! I felt so sad! I didn't even know where it was all coming from... it covered the majority of the floor, the bed, diaper bag, car-seat, my pants and sweater were soaked and poor little Carter was soaked too. As a first time mommy dealing with projectile vomit, I immediately said "help" "help" "help" and in no time at all a nurse was there to help us. We got everything cleaned up.. put Carter in a new pair of jammies and in a few minutes the doctor was there to see us.
Carter has just a virus.. thats going around.. the flu pretty much. He said vomiting is "normal" and same with diarrhea.. he told us that he was not dehydrated and to just keep doing what we are doing.. lots of liquid.. cuddles and sleep. I can do that.
We have been giving Carter Pedialyte through a syringe which he really doesn't mind and its the best way for us to get liquids in his little body. Of course Carter is teething really bad too so on occasion we accompany his Pedialyte with infant Tylenol.
These have been some of our "life-savers" over the past few days...
My house is a mess... and probably smells like dirty diapers as I change one ever 30 minutes it feels like. I have done probably 20 loads of laundry over the past 4 days (yes.. at least 5 loads a day from blowouts including blankets sheets.. sleepers and more!) ... but none of that matters. All that matters is giving Carter the most attention possible with cuddles and stories. I adore cuddling with Carter, it is the best part of my day and although its no fun that he is sick... he is cuddly and I love that so I will take every second of it that I can.
So why aren't I taking advantage of it now.. as I blog? As I was folding laundry with Carter sitting beside me, all of a sudden he flops over and immediately fell asleep on a pile of clean laundry....
So I would be cuddling with him... but.. the laundry looks pretty comfy for now and he has been sleeping for almost 2 hours which is wonderful for that little immune system! I love you Carter and Mommy hopes you get better soon! xoxo
