Irritation.. I mean Irrigation
Last summer, we got chinch bugs in our backyard. We hired guys to come out and spray and kill them, I sprayed them multiple times a day with boiling hot water and dish soap and it was an overwhelming sense of ICK in the backyard. There were millions of them! Crawling all over our lawn, our deck, in the hot tub, on the fence. I had all the heebie-jeebies possible! These gross bugs literally just eat the roots of your grass until your grass no longer exists and then move onto the next yard (our neighbours will have to re-sod their whole backyard because of them).
We did everything we could to save our lawn. Luckily it was closer to the middle/end of August so soon the frost took over and they weren't a problem to deal with until the spring again. We asked how to actually get rid of them to ensure they never ever come back. We had someone come out this spring to spread a granular over our lawn that would hopefully kill the larvae they left behind to torture us again this summer but they told us the only way to actually ensure they never come back is to put in irrigation because they won't stay where its constantly wet.
Urg, so irritating and sooo expensive! I am so, so grateful for a handy husband who took what would have costed us $7,000 and turned it into a $1,600 project by doing it himself. He planned, called, did all the research and over the long weekend made it happen. Of course I was in the mud too but just following his direction, he was the real MVP here and I am so grateful for him!!
We were also so so grateful to have Steven's help! He made all the difference!! He was there nearly the entire day on Saturday and we couldn't have done it that fast without his help!!
We spent 13 hours straight on Saturday, 12 hours straight on Sunday and 10 hours straight on Monday before the job was done. Mom and Dad Reed came and helped us for a bit on Monday and that too was such a blessing!! They ran our Home Depot errand, solved and fixed our downspout problem and helped pressure wash and move the hard mud around. Seriously so so sooo grateful for them!! AND THEN! My parents fed us a perfect warm amazing meal Monday night.
So many family angels surrounded us that weekend on a project that had to get done in early spring admit all the other chaos and expenses of life.
Our one big hurdle was that it rained heavy so much Saturday evening, all through the night and all day Sunday so our dirt piles turned into hard cement dirt/clay and trying to move them and work with them was a nightmare and took way longer that it maybe would have if it wasn't such wet weekend.
However, all in all we didn't run into any big hiccups and the whole weekend was pretty smooth. Thank you Bri for being the Forman on this one. You are amazing and I appreciate you!
Im assuming our grass is gonna look like a total mud pile/ sad sad lawn for most of this summer but hopefully we won't get any more bugs and by next summer we should have a beautiful lawn. Im excited this project is done and the bugs won't be haunting us this summer!
